Using Google Hangout to Ensure Athletes' Safety

 As high school coaches, we have a lot of priorities; however, at the forefront is ensuring our athletes' safety. As a Cross Country coach in an urban setting, our runners are fortunate to have plenty of running paths are their disposal. While this is awesome for training, it can pose a stressor for coaches as it is impossible to have "eyes" on runners while they are out in the community. Google Hangouts has changed that. Like most school districts, we have strict policies regarding methods that teachers can communicate with their students including a clear ban on using personal phone numbers to call or text students. As our district uses Google as its educational platform, Google Hangouts provides a method that allows for the communication line between runners and their coaches. Additionally, we are able to send out reminders, updates, etc on a platform that is secure for everyone.

Pros: immediate, easy to access

Cons: Can cause distractions for students and teachers similar to text messages

Student tardies! If I had a nickel every time a teacher complains about this issue, I would be able to retire early. While venting can relieve some of the stressors for teachers, it is imperative that as educators we look to proactive strategies to teach our students the skills that will be crucial as they become adults. Bringing Current Events to the Classroom with Podcasts

 It is important for teachers to acknowledge the events in our society with their students. Sometimes we need to change our plans to discuss events that are impacting our students' lives. When I was in the classroom, I found these discussions provided those so-important opportunities to connect with my students. Using podcasts such as New York Times's, The Daily , can be a stepping-off point to start these discussions. It is imperative that prior to discussing controversial or sensitive topics teachers have put in the work to create a safe environment where students feel okay to share their opinions while considering opinions that are different.  Pros: Podcasts available for every topic, interactive, engaging Cons: Can be challenging for visual learners
